All 16 isolates of A. sanguinicola were leucine aminopeptidase and pyrrolidonylarylamidase positive, which is unique to this species among the aerococci. All A. sanguinicola isolates grew in broth containing 6.5% NaCl, hydrolyzed hippurate, and were variable in the bile-esculin test.

Very low minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for penicillin and relatively low MICs for cephalosporins and carbapenems have been found for both A. urinae and A. Sanguinicola [6, 29]. The mainstay of treatment has been beta-lactams for AUE [ 30 ]. A. urinae may also cause invasive infections including urosepsis and infective endocarditis, especially in elderly men with underlying urinary tract diseases. A. urinae is sensitive to many commonly used antibiotics such as penicillin, cephalosporins, and vancomycin.

Aerococcus bacteriuria is known to be common amongst the elderly, with a female predominance . The majority of urinary isolates are Aerococcus urinae (55–66%) followed by Aerococcus sanguinicola (26–46%).

Both Aerococcus species were susceptible to β-lactam antibiotics with modal MICs for penicillin based on 308 A. urinae and 65 A. sanguinicola isolates in the MIC range of 0.03-0.06 mg/L [1 Rasmussen M. Aerococcus: An increasingly acknowledged human pathogen.

In a retrospective population-based study on aerococcal bacteremia, 77 cases were identified during a three-year period (A. urinae n=49, A. sanguinicola n=13, A. viridans n=14 and A. christensenii n=1). Aerococcus urinae is a member of the bacterial genus Aerococcus. The bacterium is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus growing in clusters. Isolates of this genus were originally isolated in 1953 from samples collected in the air and dust of occupied rooms and were distinguished by their tetrad cellular arrangements. Most A. sanguinicola isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin, whereas most A. urinae isolates had low MICs. Clinical studies are needed to establish clinical breakpoints and optimal treatment. Elevated erythromycin MICs were noted in 41% of A. sanguinicola and 17% of A. urinae isolates and elevated levofloxacin MICs were noted in 78% of A. sanguinicola and 33% of A. urinae isolates. For A. urinae , time-kill studies have been reported for penicillin, gentamicin, netilmicin and vancomycin for only four strains ( 62 , 67 ).

Aerococcus sanguinicola is a member of the bacterial genus Aerococcus and is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus growing in clusters. This species was defined in 2001 and has since then been increasingly recognized as a pathogen causing urinary tract infections and also invasive infections including infective endocarditis.

Aerococcus urinae is a rare organism infrequently isolated from cultures. Mostly known to cause urinary tract infection, it can cause bacteremia leading to severe urosepsis and infective endocarditis. Embolization is frequently reported with Aerococcus urinae endocarditis (AUE); hence, the presentation is highly variable.

The isolates had low MICs to amoxicillin, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, doxycycline, linezolid, meropenem, penicillin, rifampin, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and vancomycin.
